Towards the end of 1970 Barry purchased the ex-Blair Shepherd Edmunds Offenhauser #99, painted it white and renumbered it # 26. The car gave his driving career a new lease of life and he bounced back to his superlative best.

Utu! Barry B in the Golden Orchid Offy spins American visitor Johnny Parsons Jr in the STP Offy. Parsons spun Barry onto the infield during the early stages of the 1970-71 World 30 lap Quarter Mile Championship at Western Springs. Barry persuaded a push truck driver to restart him and he came onto the track just behind Parsons! Barry kept coming until he spun Parsons. It was vintage Buttercrunch, much to the delight of the crowd!

On his 1970-71 visit Barry (R) first met hostile hippy, Garry Patterson (L). Gary was, to say the least, a character! The two of them hit it off and it was Garry who got Barry the ride in the Tommy Boltinghouse supermodified at West Capital Raceway on his first racing vist to the USA in 1973.

A poignant moment for Barry (second from right in the front row of drivers),as well as the other drivers from Sydney, as Bob “two gun” Tattersall is interviewed prior to racing at Liverpool Raceway on his final visit to Australia in April 1971. Bob was very ill with cancer and died less than 6 months later.

Barry (#26) leading the 1971 Jeff Freeman Memorial feature with a very sick Bob Tattersall in hot pursuit in the Mackay Offenhauser. Bob pushed him all the way. A week later Barry won the NSW Speedcar Championship with Tattersall fourth. They were hollow victories for Barry who had been trying to beat Tattersall for so many years and when he finally did win, the great American driver was stricken with cancer.
